Whether a golf course is located in British Columbia's lower mainland, the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, the southermost reaches of Ontario or the Atlantic coast line of Nova Scotia, basic maintenance practises are, for the most part, identical from one place to the next. With the exception of certain unique challenges indigenous to a particular geographic setting, all golf courses will mow, fertilize, irrigate and deal with pest problems, among other practises. One course which can't lay claim to such a routine can be found in Holman, N.W.T. located on Queen Victoria Island on the 72nd parallel. In fact it is the most northern golf course in the world!

Turf & Recreation - Synthetic Lawns on the rise in Western Canada.
The popularity of Synthetic Turf has moved beyond sports fields, where it all began several years ago. Since then, synthetic putting greens have been constructed in locations spanning the far north, where grass will not effectively grow, to residential back yards. More recently, homeowners wishing to put and end to high-maintenance lawn care are having their entire front and back yards converted to synthetic turf.

“There is just more and more interest in synthetics, and it's making sense to alot of people,” said Randy steinley, president of Calgary, Alta.-based Mirage Putting Greens, said that although his company's main product is artificial putting greens, the current trend indicates five years from now synthetic lawns will overtake the No.1 spot in it's product line.
